Shuttle launch outlook gets slightly cloudier – msnbc.com

Photographers and observers place their cameras at the base of the space shuttle Endeavour’s launch pad at Kennedy Space Center in Florida in preparation for Friday’s scheduled liftoff.

The wild weather that is sweeping through America’s Southeast has had a mild impact on the outlook for the shuttle Endeavour’s final flight, with forecasters raising the chances of a delay in Friday’s launch from 20 to 30 percent.

Right now, the weather is the only question mark about a flight that’s expected to attract upwards of 700,000 spectators, including notables ranging from President Barack Obama and wounded U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords to “Star Trek” actor LeVar Burton and gamer/astronaut Richard Garriott.

The skies over Kennedy Space Center in Florida were mostly sunny this morning, but chief weather officer Kathy Winters said that the tail end of a storm system that left a trail of destruction through Alabama was headed for the Florida coast.

“The weather is expected to get a little bit bad this evening,” Winters told reporters.

If low clouds are still hanging around when it’s time to launch, at 3:47 p.m. ET Friday, the launch would have to be delayed at least 24 hours. The potential cloud ceiling, added to the chance of unacceptably high crosswinds, led Winters and her fellow forecasters to downgrade the weather outlook from 80 percent positive to 70 percent positive. Which is still pretty positive, as weather forecasts go.

NASA test director Jeff Spaulding said the countdown was proceeding without any technical hitches. But if the launch has to be put on hold on Friday, whether for weather or for other reasons, Spaulding said NASA would still have at least three more opportunities for liftoff over the next week.

Notable launch
This launch is notable for several reasons: It marks Endeavour’s final space outing before it heads for retirement at the California Science Center in Los Angeles. It’ll be the second-to-last shuttle launch ever, setting the stage for Atlantis to close out the 30-year shuttle program this summer. Endeavour will be bringing up the $2 billion Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer, one of the biggest physics experiments ever launched into orbit. And perhaps most poignantly, the launch is the focus of a love story involving Giffords and her husband, Endeavour commander Mark Kelly.

Giffords, an Arizona Democrat who is recovering from a grave head wound sustained in January during a shooting attack in Tucson, was flown to Florida from her rehabilitation center in Houston to see the launch and take part in family festivities.

President Obama, along with his wife and two daughters, are due to witness the launch from the space center as well, in between a visit to storm-stricken Alabama and a commencement address at Miami Dade College. The last sitting president to attend a shuttle launch was Bill Clinton, who came to the Cape to see off senator-astronaut John Glenn in 1998. It’s not yet clear whether the Obamas will be with Giffords or at a different secure location for the launch.

“We will be ready to accommodate, wherever that location is,” Spaulding said.

Tweeters in attendance
Other celebrities in attendance this time around include LeVar Burton, who played Geordi LaForge on “Star Trek: Next Generation”; and Seth Green, who has appeared in the “Austin Power” movies and a host of other films and TV shows. The actors are among 150 Twitter users who were invited to the launch to participate in a NASA tweetup, and they traded tweets for their own meetup at the Cape.

“Where are you, man?” Burton tweeted to the red-haired Green. “My Ginger detector is on the fritz?”

“Less than 20 feet away from you!” Green replied. “Why won’t you say hi to me?!?”

Richard Garriott, the millionaire video-game developer who became the first son of a NASA astronaut to go into space himself in 2008, also tweeted that he was heading down to Florida to see the launch.

Spaulding told reporters that he and the rest of the launch team weren’t changing their routine just because a high-profile audience was hoping to see Endeavour rise on Friday. “We do the exact same level of effort” in advance of every liftoff, he said, and there’d be no pressure to put on a show.

“Our team is really focused in on what we’re doing here,” he said.

‘The Voice’ garners mixed response – International Business Times

April 27th, 2011 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Celebrities, Entertainment, Google, Hot News

As of now, the celeb mentors have three singers each. Team Christina includes: Tarralyn Ramsey, Frenchie Davis and Beverly McClellan. Team Blake has Patrick Thomas, Elenowen, and Xenia. Team Cee Lo includes: Vicci Martinez, Kelsey Rey, Tje Austin while Team Adam includes: Jeff Jenkins, Rebecca Loebe and Javier Colon.

The Mark Burnett-produced show has garnered mixed reactions from viewers and critics. While the show has turned into a buzzing topic on online platforms like Twitter, some early reviews are damaging.
On the microblogging site Twitter, the show as well as the judges earned praises.

One user tweeted: “#thevoice is MY NEW FAVE COMPETITION SHOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! they are all AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

Another shared: “ohmygosh. I’m loving #TheVoice! Good job @NBC! #fb”

Praising Cee Lo Green, who seems to have trumped Christina to emerge as the favorite among the four celeb mentors, another Twitter user posted: “Damn this show is really good. This stuff makes me cry. @ceelogreen is so sweet. Love #thevoice to see his personality.”

Meanwhile, the blogosphere and the entertainment media churned out varying reviews of the show. While a Chron.com Entertainment blog admitted that the show was promising contrary to the initial expectations, a review on Entertainment Weekly was anything but kind.

“It initially seemed overly complicated and overstuffed with celebrities… Plus, once the “blind auditions” are over, isn’t it just another singing show?” the blog on Chron.com noted, before going on to admit, “But what do you know? The premiere — despite Carson Daly — was promising. Cee Lo Green is a charmer. Christina Aguilera will always have a piece of my heart. And Blake Shelton is hilarious. I think I’ll stick around.”

Impressed by the “personality” of the judges, the Wall Street Journal observed that The Voice had “more of a game show quality to it than many other TV singing competitions.”

Entertainment Weeky’s Ken Tucker, however, called the a “garish bore.”

“The problems with The Voice begin with the fact that it exists,” Tucker argued.

He goes on, “Which is the other thing that makes ‘The Voice’ tedious: You’re not just rooting for the singers, you’re also supposed to root for the judges – they need to win over contestants so they can “fill out their teams” of eight vocalists.”

Tucker concludes by rubbishing the “blind audition” process. Although “distinctive”, it lasts only for the few minutes of every contestant’s initial performance.

“Once the “coach” gets a load of who he or she might be coaching, the singer’s whole package (look, age, attitude) comes into play as much as it does on Idol. So unless America is transfixed by spinning chairs – and by next week’s new visual gimmick, a glowing boxing ring in which contestants will bellow it out – I can’t imagine (or hope) The Voice will gather much momentum,” he establishes in the review.

Rumor We Love: Beyonce And Jay-Z Asked To Perform At The Royal Wedding – The FABlife

April 25th, 2011 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Business, Celebrities, Hot News

This royal wedding business is getting out of hand, in our opinion, but if there’s one thing we’ve learned about Prince William and Kate Middleton, it’s that they seem like pretty fun, typical young people. (The Royals: Just Like Us!) First of all, perhaps you’ll remember when Prince Harry wanted Snoop Dogg to perform at his brother’s bachelor party. That kinda surprised us, but at the same time, if you can afford to have Snoop at your bachelor party, why not?

And now the word is that William and Kate want Jay-Z and Beyonce to perform “Crazy In Love” at the royal wedding reception. A source says “They really wanted to make their big day even more special and what better way than by getting pop royalty to perform at the party? … They both wanted to ditch traditions and make it more personal for them. Jay-Z and Beyoncé are both in Europe at the moment while she promotes her new single ‘Girls Who Run The World.’ So it’s highly likely they have taken up the Royals’ offer.” Among other celebs on the Royal wedding guest list are Guy Ritchie, Joss Stone, Elton John, and the Beckhams. Since the royal family has announced that they’ll be broadcasting the wedding on YouTube, maybe we’ll get a glimpse of the Beyonce performance if it really happens.

Catherine Zeta-Jones’ bipolar II struggle calls attention to disorder – OregonLive.com

April 14th, 2011 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Celebrities, Movie, Uncategorized
Fans of Catherine Zeta-Jones are searching online for her name and bipolar symptoms today as they try to understand why the beautiful, poised Jones checked herself into a mental health facility recently. Her publicist confirmed reports Monday that the Welsh actress had sought treatment for bipolar II disorder but added that she feels great now and is eager to begin work on two films.

David J. Miklowitz, who wrote “The Bipolar Disorder Survival Guide: What You and Your Family Need to Know,” told the Los Angeles Times that the condition “formerly known as manic-depression, is typically lifelong and recurrent.” Miklowitz, a psychiatry professor at the UCLA Medical School, outlines the symptoms and notes that “bipolar disorder and creativity have been linked,” adding “that first-chair violinists are more likely to have been treated for the disease than others — and that Tchaikovsky, Van Gogh and Hemingway were said to have been bipolar.”

Reports that Zeta-Jones, 41, has had a stressful year, which may have triggered the disorder, focus on her husband’s illness. Michael Douglas has spent several months fighting throat cancer with often grueling chemotherapy treatments. But The Daily Mail suggests Zeta-Jones may have been struggling before Douglas’ diagnosis:

“An excitable and rambling speech at last year’s Tony Awards . . . may have been the first clue that all was not well with the Welsh beauty,” the British paper reports.  Receiving an award for her performance in “In a Little Night Music,” she pointed at her husband and “blurted out: ‘See that man there? He’s a movie star and I get to sleep with him every night.’” Later the actress said she couldn’t believe she’d said “something as crass as that.”

A number of celebrities have been linked to bipolar II disorder. People Magazine reports that Carrie Fisher once described the mood swings she experienced: “The last time, I hacked off my hair, got a tattoo, and wanted to convert to Judaism.”  The Hollywood Reporter’s list includes Linda Hamilton, Jane Pauley, Russell Brand, Mel Gibson, Britney Spears, Brian Wilson, Pete Wentz and Ben Stiller.

Shirley MacLaine explains lighting in her new book and warns against murdering … – Los Angeles Times

April 11th, 2011 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Celebrities, Hot News, Movie

MaclaineShirley MacLaine has done it all and even knows where to sit in the sun.

The bestselling author, Oscar winner and New Age spiritualist has a new book of wisdom to share with the universe as well as people who aspire to shine on the big and little screen.

“First of all, you need to know where to sit,” MacLaine writes in her latest book “I’m All Over That.”

“If it’s daytime, you sit facing the outside light. Natural light is very nice for the skin — as long as it’s not direct sunlight. If you’re really smart, you place your partner just to the side of where the light is hitting you. You’ll know you are in the right daytime lighting position when you can’t see his face. He is completely backlit. You won’t know how he is reacting to your daytime dialogue, but you do know you look as good as possible when the sun is out,” the 10-time Golden Globes winner writes.

MacLaine, who happens to be Warren Beaty’s older sister, also has advice for celebrities and others who are accosted by the likes of news crews and paparazzi.

“If you are a person who is stopped on the street for a ‘reality’ interview, ask them what filter they have in the camera. Black full pro mist is the best, but everything else will look slightly blurred, which is what you want for your face. Otherwise, just keep walking,” MacLaine advises.

“I have no solution for the paparazzi who jump out at you in highly inappropriate environments,” MacLaine, who has sold more than 20 million books, admits. “Except perhaps murder. But then, even paparazzi can be reincarnated.”

Bad lighting isn’t the only thing MacLaine warns others to avoid. While on set during her first movie role, “The Trouble With Harry”, director Alfred Hitchcock got her in the bad habit of eating fatty foods. A behavior even the film studio had to alert her about.

“I never realized that my weight was visibly changing on film — maybe ten pounds from one scene to another when the film was assembled,” MacLaine, who ended up appearing in over 50 other films wrote.  “The president of Paramount called me and asked me what I thought I was doing. I said, ‘Eating what I couldn’t afford before.’ He said, ‘Now you’ve got some money, you’re not going to starve. Quit or we’ll have to shoot retakes.’ That hadn’t occurred to me. Hitch obviously had a food problem. But with him, carrying extra weight was his image. I was a different story.”
